Lutron lists common openness factors of 1%, 3%, 5% and 10% for sheer fabrics. These are not universal 5% steps and do not equal visible light transmission (Tv). Colour and fabric reference also matter; assess night-time privacy with the interior lights on.

Technical concepts
- Sheer / blackout blind
- A sheer fabric filters light; an opaque blind restricts it. The final darkness also depends on side channels and gaps.
- Scene / preset / macro
- A scene stores several levels and positions. A macro combines actions, which can also run in sequence.
- Keypad / switch
- A keypad can activate scenes across a system; a conventional switch operates one circuit.
